Mental Health PIECE | Dance

From the Choreographer, Argelis Capellan

"We live in a world where if you speak about your mental health you either are crazy or your making it up. Sometimes dealing with mental health can be even more painful when you simply cant express yourself with the correct words. Trying to explain what you feel when you get an anxiety attack is like trying to figure out why so many crazy things are happening in this world.....you can’t really explain it! You have voices in your head that make you go crazy plus your different mood swings. God has definitely taken me out of dark places plus being able to do something that I love makes it all better! I’ve always said this “I may not be book smart but when I’m in a dance studio I feel like a genius” When creating this piece I wanted people to see how no matter what you go through you can overcome it. This piece was created for exactly these reasons. It was created for you who are reading this to know that from a dark place you can enter into a place of peace. Theirs been moments of deep anxiety where I cant stop crying on my pillow to me exceeding into the women I am now. Not always we have to carry those dark places with us. You are capable of letting it go, you are capable of entering a place of peace! You do not have to apologize for the way you feel, express it and LET IT GO! You got this!"

The Architect of Smoke & Glass

World Mental Health Day 5 Challenge was to present your coping mechanism and sharing how to tell when you need help.
For years, David prided himself on being a master architect. Whenever life felt too loud, too unpredictable, or too painful, he didn't sit with the discomfort. He built structures instead.
When his self-worth plummeted, he built The Casino of Tomorrow. Inside its flashing, neon-lit walls, he gambled away his savings, chasing the fleeting high of a win to drown out the voice whispering that he wasn’t enough. When the neon faded, he built The Gallery of Excess. He filled it with pristine, expensive clothing and gadgets he couldn't afford, using retail therapy to buy a temporary identity.
When his relationships grew complicated, he built The Fortress of Anger. From its battlements, he screamed at the people who loved him, pushing them away before they could reject him first. Yet, terrified of the silence that followed, he would immediately tear down the fortress and sprint into The Hall of Mirrors. There, he bound himself to anyone who would look at his way, entirely unable to be without a relationship. In that hall, he learned to swallow the cruel words of toxic partners, believing the abuse from others because a painful connection felt safer than facing the void of being alone.
To control the chaos of it all, he built The Ledger of Calories. He restricted his food to a cellular level, or gorged in secret, using an eating disorder as a physical dial to turn down his emotional volume.
For a long time, David told himself these structures were survival skills. They kept him distracted. They kept him numb. They kept him alive.
But a house built to withstand a storm shouldn't slowly suffocate the person inside.
The turning point came on a Tuesday. David stood in the center of his crowded, chaotic city of coping mechanisms. He looked at his empty bank account, his fractured relationships, his exhausted, malnourished body, and the abusive partner yelling in the next room. He realized the terrifying truth: his coping skills were no longer protecting him from the pain; they were producing the pain. The tools he used to survive had become the very walls trapping him.
He took a deep breath, stepped outside the smoke and glass, and reached for a phone to call for help. He didn't need to build anymore. It was time to heal.

When to Get Help:

  • The "Solution" Becomes the Problem: the behavior (gambling, spending, restricting food, relationship hopping, etc.) creates more chaos or emotional distress than the problem you were escaping.
  • Loss of Control: You engage in the behavior even when you promise yourself you won't.
  • Interference with Daily Life: Your coping mechanisms are damaging your health, performance at work or school, or finances.
  • Strained Relationships: Loved ones express deep concern or you push them away in anger.
  • Diminishing Returns: The behavior no longer gives you the "high" or the relief it used to,

How Fear of Being Labeled or Diagnosed Prevents Mental Health Care

World Mental Health Day 4 Challenge - Fear of judgment. Fear of a diagnosis. Fear of being misunderstood. Fear of revisiting pain. Fear that what you share won’t stay private. Many people don’t avoid care because they don’t want to get better. They avoid it because getting help requires being vulnerable. What makes it difficult to take that first step? Express it creatively. For our Day 4 challenge, it only seemed fitting to share this raw, honest clip from our Mental Health Ambassador Spotlight with Daniel Lazzari where we discuss the impact of labels.

Heavy

I always thought that being strong
meant holding it all inside.
I carried the weight for far too long,
with nowhere left to hide.
I wish I knew I needed help when the days began to blur,
and getting out of bed each morn
felt harder than it used to be,
and left me feeling torn.
I wish I knew I needed help when the smallest things felt big,
like a spilled cup on the floor,
or a gentle question from a friend
that I just couldn’t face anymore.
I wish I knew I needed help when I forgot how to just breathe,
and spent my time pretending
that everything was perfectly fine,
while my own world was bending.
You do not have to do this alone.
The burden is too much to bear.
It is okay to let it down,
and let somebody care.

Look Up

World Mental Health Day2 Challenge - Have online conversations changed how you understand your own mental health? Turn your experience into art, words, music, or another creative expression on the Wall of Hope.

I'm sharing Look Up a popular poem by @gary_turk on Instagram.

Do his points ring true for you?

  • "Social" Media is making us less social
  • Counting the number of friends we have online, but feeling that none actually know us
  • Using iPads to entertain our children instead of teaching them to entertain themselves or giving them our attention
  • Having moments so special that rather than posting to many "followers" on social media, you share only with loved family and friends.

Share how you relate or don't...

Does the Quiet Still Know My Name?

I keep the blue light close even when it burns. Some nights it carries me to rooms full of strangers who already know my name, who send soft replies when the quiet feels too heavy to carry alone. I post the things that matter, watch them travel farther than my voice ever could, and for a moment the distance between what I care about and what I can touch shrinks to the size of a screen. But the same glow that gathers also multiplies. One sharp comment lands like a stone in still water, and suddenly every face I pass on the street seems to be measuring me. I scroll past perfect urgency, perfect rest, perfect joy, and forget what my own hands feel like when they are empty. Some mornings I open the app before I open my eyes and the weight arrives first— a hundred small urgencies asking to be held before I have even stood up. Still, there are moments when a single message cuts through the noise and reminds me I am not the only one trying to stay soft in a loud world. I am learning the difference between connection and constant presence, between sharing what matters and disappearing into the feed. Tonight I will close the screen a little earlier, let the dark settle without asking permission, and see if the quiet still knows my name. ***the image is a rendering of me that I used Lucy my AI assistant, to help create. 🙂
